What is TEF or Test d’Évaluation de Français Exam?

Developed by the CCIP (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris), the TEF is an international benchmark exam that evaluates your proficiency in the French language.

The TEF measures your skills in 4 primary linguistic competencies, namely
(i) Oral comprehension (Compréhension orale)
(ii) Written comprehension (Compréhension écrite
(iii) Oral expression (Expression orale)
(iv) Written expression (Expression écrite)
(v) Grammar & Vocabulary.
The exam is officially recognized by several institutions and governments:
The Canadian government for immigration and citizenship (TEF Canada)
The French Ministry of the Interior for citizenship applications (TEF IRN)
Universities and academic institutions for admission in French-speaking countries
Professional settings for career advancement or job applications
The exam is structured to align with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), ranging from A1 (beginner) to C2 (advanced).
TEF Exam Formats and Variants
There are several versions of the TEF, each with a specific purpose:
TEF Canada: Required for immigration to Canada, especially for Express Entry or permanent residency.
TEF IRN (Intégration, Résidence, Nationalité): Used for applying for French nationality or long-term residency.
TEFAQ: A version of the TEF required by the Quebec government for immigration purposes.
TEF Études: Accepted by universities and academic institutions in French-speaking countries.
TEF Naturalisation: A specific version required for French citizenship.
Each version may include different modules based on the requirements of the institution or immigration program.
Structure of TEF
The TEF consists of five main parts, each part is scored independently,:
Listening comprehension (Compréhension Orale) – 40 minutes
Reading comprehension (Compréhension Écrite) – 60 minutes
Written expression (Expression Écrite) – 60 minutes
Oral expression (Expression Orale) – 15 minutes (Face-to-Face)
Lexical and structural knowledge (Lexique et Structure) – 30 minutes
The results are valid for two years.
